Great Pyrenees
Description: The
Great Pyrenees gives the distinct impression of elegance and unsurpassed beauty
combined with great overall size and majesty. He has a weather resistant coat
that will allows him to withstand intense cold temperatures. He needs human
companionship and attention and lots of space. The Great Pyrenees will not do
well with apartment dwellers. He is a pleasant, gentle breed of enormous size,
extremely intelligent, loyal to his family.

With Children: Usually gentle, makes an
great playmate for children.

Very High, will bark and if necessary, fight predators.

Care and Training:
Daily brushing of his long double coat, extra grooming during shedding. Bathing
only when necessary. Needs plenty of exercise but a large yard with ample space
to roam will give him enough exercise. Must be well trained.
Learning Rate: Medium. Smart, but must
respect owner.
Activity: Medium,
but must be exercised daily. Long walks are good.
Living Environment: Rural or suburban is
best. Should live with a family have a job to do. Needs human companionship and
attention.
Health Issues:
Usually very healthy, may suffer from hip dysplasia, hot spot skin conditions,
epilepsy.

History: He is one of the oldest
of the natural breeds dating back to about 3000 B.C. He was developed in the
Pyrenees for rugged mountain work, guarding flocks against wolves and bears and
drawing sleds. He was also said to have been used as a guard dog of sheep and
chateaux. A favorite at the French court prior to the French Revolution.
